Re:Nylon

It has always been a key material for Prada. The debut of the brand's '84 collection Pocone in its line of bags and accessories won it worldwide acclaim. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy collection that buzzbeast-ready Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in for the Met Gala. Now the powerhouse Milan-based house has reinvented its iconic nylon bags by turning them into sustainable re:Nylon fabric. The new collection includes six classic styles -- bags for belts, shoulder bag, tote bag, duffle bag, and two backpacks made from recycled ECONYL fabric made from recycled plastics, fishing nets and textile fiber wastes sourced worldwide.

The material that is repurposed is a result of a collaboration with Aquafil, an Italian textile yarn manufacturer that makes Econyl fabric from recycled nylon waste that can be reused over and over again without losing its quality. The Business of Fashion reports that the repurposed material is part of a larger effort to change the entire Prada portfolio from virgin nylon to Re:Nylon by 2021. The collection includes six new Re:Nylon handbags as well as a pair of ECONYL boots and shoes, and a line of apparel made of the same fabric.

To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to create a series of videos titled "What We Carry" that showcases the cutting-edge process which is used to make its Re:Nylon bags. The first video features Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, as well as National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona that transforms old nylon into recycled ECONYL.

With the switch to re:Nylon Prada is achieving its biggest reduction in virgin nylon use yet, resulting in the saving of 70,000 barrels of oil per year, The Business of Fashion reports. Additionally, the change will cut down on the company's carbon emissions by an estimated 57,000 tons. It's the latest sustainability effort from the label that recently went fur-free in its clothing and accessories, a move which was lauded by animal rights activists and environmentalists alike.

Recycled nylon

Recycled nylon is not without its drawbacks. It's not biodegradable and can be buried in landfills or the ocean for decades until it is broken down into smaller particles which can harm wildlife. The fabric is also non-breathable and may shed microplastics when washed. It uses 50 percent less energy than regular virgin nylon, and is more durable.

The fabric is made of a mixture of waste plastics and petroleum, which is derived from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources and carbon emissions from production of virgin nylon. It is also easier to handle than other bags since it doesn't require to be dyed or woven.  prada bag black  makes it an ideal option for bags that will be used frequently like gym and yoga equipment.

Recycled nylon is more durable and flexible than cotton or polyester that are both traditional fabrics. It's also able to stand up to the most severe abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor gear. The material is also incredibly light and can be easily formed and stitched into the ideal shape for a bag. Nylon is a fantastic fabric for outdoor gear, because it is impervious to water and doesn't take on smells.

When you're choosing a bag that's sustainable, make sure to look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification tests for chemical residues, as also social and environmental responsibility. Look for brands that have this certification, as they are likely to be more transparent and responsible with their products.

Patagonia is a good example. It has a variety of yoga gear and backpacks that are made from recycled nylon called Econyl. This nylon is produced using a closed loop system that uses 50% less energy than virgin nylon. The brand also supports groups who are dedicated to protecting our planet.
